Nottingham Forest boss explains Sammy Ameobi's absence against Bristol City

A slight ankle injury kept Sammy Ameobi out of the Nottingham Forest matchday squad against Bristol City.

But the winger is expected to be available to face Huddersfield Town at the City Ground next weekend.

Ameobi’s enforced absence had been the only change Reds boss Chris Hughton made to his starting XI at Ashton Gate, with Anthony Knockaert taking his place.

Forest were the better team against the Robins, particularly in the first half, and dominated possession - but they could not find a way through as the game finished 0-0.

“Sammy tweaked his ankle in training. It’s very minimal,” Hughton said.

“We had to make a decision on whether to play him or not.

“At this stage of the season, I didn’t think it was worth risking him in case he ended up making it worse.

“We fully expect him to train next week and to be available for next Saturday.”

The Reds had gone into the clash aiming to record three league wins on the spin for the first time this season, having seen off Cardiff City and QPR over the Easter weekend.

They struggled to create clearcut chances, however, with Alex Mighten going closest to breaking the deadlock when he hit the post in the first half.

The stalemate nevertheless made it four unbeaten for Hughton’s men.

They are 13 points clear of the relegation zone, in 15th place, with five matches remaining.
