Nottingham Forest boss discusses transfer latest with admission about loan market

Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton remains keen to bolster his forward resources before the transfer window closes.

The Reds have so far added goalkeeper Ethan Horvath and attacking midfielder Philip Zinckernagel this summer, with right-back Jordi Osei-Tutu expected to become the club’s third new signing, on loan from Arsenal.

But with a need to get more goals from his squad, in a bid to challenge further up the Championship table, Hughton says further work will be done in the transfer market.

Bringing in a left-back is a priority, amid a shortage of options, along with strengthening in central midfield, as well as adding a striker.

“We have some areas that we are still doing a lot of work on,” Hughton told NottinghamshireLive.

“We are very conscious that we still need to bring more numbers into the squad.

“But the priority area was very much in that forward department that can get us goals and assists, to help us win more games.

“So yes, that is an area we are looking at.”

Forest will also continue to assess potential loanees, with Zinckernagel spending the season at the City Ground from Watford and Manchester United’s James Garner still a target.

“I think most teams will try to utilise the loan market the best way they can, and try to get the maximum numbers they can,” said Hughton.

“We were no different last season. We had five players, which is the maximum on loan.

“I think, as much as possible, clubs will try to utilise it again. That’s something which has always been the case, and will be as the years go on - particularly at a time when a lot of clubs are trying to tighten their squads and not have as big a squad as they have had in the past. The loan market becomes even more invaluable then.”

Zinckernagel made his debut in the Garibaldi when he came off the bench in Sunday’s opening league defeat at Coventry City.

He could feature again when Bradford visit the City Ground in the Carabao Cup tomorrow night.

The 26-year-old helped the Hornets secure promotion to the Premier League when he joined in January, on a free transfer from Bodo Glimt.

And prior to that, the Dane had bagged 19 goals in 28 outings during a title-winning season for the Norwegian outfit.

“He’s got experience. For his age, he’s played a lot of games,” said Hughton.

“He definitely gives us flexibility across the forward line - left, right or off the front man.

“He gives us the opportunity to use him in three different positions.

“He’s someone who has played in European games and has had the benefit of experience in this division for half of last season. He has brought that with him.”
