Nottingham Forest boss comments on loanees as James Garner situation explained

Boss Chris Hughton’s summer audit of his Nottingham Forest squad will encompass all players “who are contracted” to the club.

And that includes those who have been on loan abroad this season.

There will be significant changes at the City Ground once the campaign comes to an end, as the Reds manager looks to trim numbers and put his stamp on the dressing room.

Hughton will assess who he wants to keep ready for an assault on the top end of the Championship table, and who he is prepared to let go.

Get Garner

James Garner has been one of the few shining lights for Nottingham Forest in an otherwise disappointing season.

Since his arrival on loan in January, the Manchester United midfielder has made a big impact, even putting himself in the running for the Reds’ Player of the Season.

Success in the loan market - or indeed transfer business as a whole - has been hit and miss for Forest in recent years, but the addition of Garner will go down as a triumph.

During his time in charge, Hughton has used four different players in that role.

Nicholas Ioannou managed a handful of run-outs, only to not feature again after he was sent off at Luton Town. A loan move to Aris Thessaloniki in January then followed.

Team news

Jamie Paterson will not be available to face former club Nottingham Forest for Bristol City on Saturday.

The Robins playmaker, who spent three years at the City Ground, has been ruled out for the rest of the season by a groin injury that requires surgery, meaning he may have played his last game for the club.

The Reds’ opponents have a number of players on the treatment table ahead of the clash at Ashton Gate.

Liam Walsh had already been told he will play no further part in the campaign because of injury, while forwards Chris Martin and Andi Weimann are also out of action.
