Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton names his team to face Cardiff City in FA Cup

Boss Chris Hughton rung the changes for Nottingham Forest’s third round FA Cup tie against Cardiff City.

The Reds boss made eight alterations in total from the XI which had started last weekend’s victory over Preston North End - and it looked like there would be a change in formation, too.

Jordan Smith was handed his first appearance of the season, with first-choice goalkeeper Brice Samba dropping to the bench.

And it would be a new-look back line ahead of him, as Carl Jenkinson and Gaetan Bong were set to step in at right and left-back, respectively.

Scott McKenna would make his comeback from an ankle injury, after being an unused substitute at Deepdale, partnering Joe Worrall in the heart of the defence - the latter one of only three players to keep his place, and wearing the captain’s armband.

There was no Yuri Ribeiro or Tobias Figueiredo in the squad, but Cyrus Christie was among the substitutes.

Hughton looked set to go with a 4-4-2 formation at the City Ground.

Cafu retained his spot in midfield, as did winger Sammy Ameobi, with Harry Arter and Joe Lolley coming in as Samba Sow and Ryan Yates dropped to the bench.

There was no Anthony Knockaert, after his loan extension on Friday was not completed in time for him to feature.

It was all change up front, as Hughton brought in Miguel Angel Guerrero and Lyle Taylor, leaving Lewis Grabban out of the matchday squad all together.

The bench would be made up of Samba, Christie, Loic Mbe Soh, Alex Mighten, Michael Dawson, Sow, Yates, Tyler Blackett and Will Swan.

Forest: Smith, Jenkinson, Worrall, McKenna, Bong, Lolley, Cafu, Arter, Ameobi, Guerrero, Taylor. Subs: Samba, Christie, Mbe Soh, Mighten, Dawson, Sow, Yates, Blackett, Swan.
