Nottingham Forest await major FIFA announcement on season end, transfer window and contracts

A report has heavily hinted that Nottingham Forest's season is set to continue - at some point.

According to The Athletic, FIFA are preparing to confirm a full indefinite extension to the current 2019/2020 season, as well as alter the dates of the upcoming summer transfer window and ensure clubs can extend the seasonal contracts of players - especially those with contracts set to expire in June.

This would mean that the traditional season will be able to break free from any date restraints to conclude at an unspecified time in the future - even if the end of the current season would cut into the start of the next.

This move would make it possible for individual footballing authorities to extend seasons, and finish scheduled matches down the line, allowing more flexibility than previous.

UEFA itself committed to finishing the current football season, and while that doesn't mean that the EFL cannot void the season, it does mean that a precedent is starting to be set - with authorities now discussing how the season can be finished and fixtures completed, rather than abandoning the current campaign.

The report also confirmed that this has not yet been discussed by the Premier League or EFL - but there are fears over how TV money could be repaid should the season be abandoned.

With FIFA's new approach, it seems that the option to conclude the Championship will be prioritised - as it will now no longer be affected by an ever progressing calendar.

A decision to freeze the table and end the season would probably not benefit the Reds, as a scenario could exist where only the top-three clubs are promoted.

It remains to be seen how the EFL will handle the play-off situation, which is far from locked down.

The best solution for Nottingham Forest's play-off hopes will likely be the full conclusion of the EFL season, but there are no guarantees over how the EFL will proceed.

At the very least, FIFA has laid the foundations that could see a finish-line in place.
