Albert Adomah could return to Nottingham Forest next week as Cardiff City boss Neil Harris hits out at the EFL over the winger's situation.
Adomah's loan at Cardiff is scheduled to finish on Tuesday after Cardiff's game against Charlton.
They are keen to keep the winger until the end of the season and Harris says the player is keen to stay, but Harris thinks the EFL need to show leadership with the Championship play-off final scheduled for August 4 after the coronvarius pandemic saw the campaign stall.
"Forest is not straightforward. We are in dialogue with Forest at the moment," he told WalesOnline.
"The bottom line with Albert is I want him to stay. I've picked him for every game he has been at the club for.
"Albert wants to stay and finish the season here, so we have to keep working with Forest to try and make it happen."
Cardiff moved into the top six today, one place below Forest. When it was suggested the Reds might not be keen to let one of their players help a rival's play-off push, Harris admitted that was possible.
However, the former Reds striker says the EFL needed to make a decision on whether loan extensions should be mandatory.
"Possibly," Harris said when asked about whether this ordeal might have come about because Forest are also battling for a top-six spot. "That will be down for Forest to answer at the moment.
"I think the EFL have to take a long, hard look at themselves as well.
"It might end up with clubs in dispute when the EFL should have taken leadership and ownership of this and made loans compulsory to be finished.
"So, my gripe at the moment is with the EFL in particular."
