Nottingham Forest assistant boss Roy Keane ranked greatest player ever to be relegated from the Premier League

Nottingham Forest's assistant boss Roy Keane has been ranked as the greatest player ever to be relegated from the Premier League, according to FourFourTwo.

The 47-year-old made 156 appearances for the Reds over three seasons at the City Ground under legendary manager Brian Clough.

Signed by Brian Clough from Irish side Cobh Ramblers for £10,000, the midfield hard-man soon became a fan favourite Trentside and regularly found himself amongst the goals.

During his final season with Forest, the Reds were relegated from the Premier League, forcing Clough to depart after 18 years in charge.

Historian claims Nottingham Forest will become Football League's oldest club if Notts County are relegated

Despite being the top flight's bottom club, and finishing nine points from safety, Keane was named in the PFA Team of the Year and was sold to Manchester United for £3.75m.

"Younger readers may only recognise Keane as that terrifyingly grumpy assistant manager," said FourFourTwo's Greg Evans.

"Once upon a time he was one of the most promising youngsters in world football.

"His efforts in the inaugural Premier League season for Forest attracted attention from the division's top sides, but he was unable to drag Brian Clough's side out of danger despite earning a spot in the PFA Team of the Year.

"Keane joined Manchester United that summer – a move that worked out rather well for both player and club."

Not one pundit thinks Nottingham Forest will make the play-offs
