Nottingham Forest announce surprise transfer as they swoop for Brazilian defender

Nottingham Forest have announced the signing of Brazilian defender Rodrigo Ely on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old centre-back has put pen to paper on a deal with the Reds until the end of the 2021-22 season.

He becomes Forest's 10th signing of the summer, coming on the back of a busy transfer deadline day for the club.

Ely started out with Gremio in his homeland before earning a move to Italian giants AC Milan in 2010.

He made three senior appearances for Milan and had a number of spells out on loan during his time in Italy.

He has spent the past four seasons with Spanish top flight side Deportivo Alaves.

Forest made four deadline day signings before the summer window closed on Tuesday night.

Xande Silva, Braian Ojeda and Mohamed Drager arrived on permanent deals, while a loan move for Middlesbrough defender Djed Spence was eventually ratified by the EFL on Wednesday.

The Reds have also signed goalkeeper Ethan Horvath and brought in Philip Zinckernagel, James Garner, Jordi Osei-Tutu and Max Lowe on loans.
