Nottingham Forest announce fourth summer signing as pressure grows on Chris Hughton

Here’s a roundup of the latest Nottingham Forest news on Monday, August 23, 2021.

Fourth signing confirmed

Nottingham Forest have completed the signing of James Garner, their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The Manchester United midfielder returns for a second spell at the City Ground and the Reds have fought several Championship rivals to bring him back to the club.

Garner becomes Chris Hughton's third loanee joining attacking midfielder Philip Zinckernagel and full-back Jordi Osei-Tutu.

He made a great impression over the course of the second half of last season with Forest, starting in 19 out of 20 Championship appearances in his time at the club, netting four goals in the process from the middle of the park.

Hughton under pressure

After completing one set of post-match media interviews in the Staffordshire rain, Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton sought cover from the elements before facing further questioning.

Finding shelter from the increasing storm of criticism directed his way from angry Reds fans, however, may not be so easy.

Four successive Championship league defeats. No points. Three goals scored. Four against. Not a single shot on target at Stoke City - and only two across the full 90 minutes.

They are grim statistics. On top of the 17th place finish Forest limped to last season after Hughton had replaced Sabri Lamouchi in October.

The atmosphere among the Reds support in the last two games has turned dark.

Garner speaks

After the midfielder secured a return to the City Ground, James Garner made it clear he aims to have another successful spell at Nottingham Forest.

Garner, 20, is back at Forest for the course of the season, having scored four times in 20 appearances in a Garibaldi red shirt last term, following his loan arrival in the January transfer window.

He has seven senior appearances for Manchester United, but the Old Trafford hierarchy have allowed the youngster to spend another full season out on loan in the second tier to boost the midfielder's development with regular first team football.
