This is why Brian Clough was trending on Twitter

Nottingham Forest and Derby County fans were left rubbing their eyes following the latest appointment to Boris Johnson's cabinet.

Simon Hart has been named the new Welsh Secretary and a photograph accompanying the official announcement on Twitter reminded Reds and Rams supporters alike of a certain someone.

Many have commented on the fact that Hart bears a striking resemblance to none other than Brian Clough!

The MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire was promoted as part of a mini-reshuffle in the wake of the Conservatives' general election victory.

Hart was previously a junior minister at the Cabinet Office and his promotion marks his first entry to the cabinet.

The late Clough might not have been too happy about the comparison - he was famously a lifelong socialist.

Nonetheless, it got his name trending on Twitter. Here's what some people have been saying...

Hannah Forest: Oh look, Brian Clough is trending because the new Welsh Secretary looks exactly like him!

Adam Gray: Not saying he's the best Secretary of state for Wales in the business, but he's in the top one. #nffc

Jonny Gould: Brian Clough conquered Europe twice. No wonder Boris brought him on board. #nffc

Harland Sanders: Wait a second....

Matt Richie: Thought it was Brian Clough.

Julian Shea: Who'd have thought we'd live so long as to see Brian Clough in a #Conservative #cabinet?

James Melville: Wow. Brian Clough has been appointed Secretary of State for Wales.

Public Benjamin: That’s Brian Clough.

Amy Andrews: Brian Clough back from the dead to absolutely sabotage the new Tory government.

John Eccleston: Big move for Brian Clough in the reshuffle.

@blairmcdougall: I promise, I genuinely thought they had used a photo of Brian Clough when I saw this and wondered what the joke was. Uncanny.

@LiamThopEcho: How can someone look so much like Brian Clough and not be Brian Clough?
