Nottingham Forest ace Joao Carvalho identified as 'the chosen one' as transfer link resurfaces

Nottingham Forest record signing Joao Carvalho is said to be a target for Greek giants Olympiacos, heading into the final two weeks of the January transfer window.

The midfielder has found himself down the pecking order at the City Ground and has been struggling for game time this season.

His campaign got off to a bright start when he played a starring role in the Carabao Cup win over Bradford City in August.

Carvalho netted both goals that night as the Reds triumphed 2-1, making an eye-catching return in the Garibaldi after spending last term on loan at Spanish second division outfit Almeria.

Since then, however, he has had to settle for a bit-part role, often being an unused substitute or not even getting in the matchday squad - as was the case on Saturday as Forest beat Millwall 1-0 at The Den.

Carvalho was said to have travelled with Steve Cooper’s team to the capital for that game, but is now reportedly on the radar of fellow Evangelos Marinakis-owned side Olympiacos.

Greek website SDNA claim the club are “preparing to strengthen” their midfield with Carvalho, having identified him as “the chosen one”.

The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to the Piraeus side several times before.

It is said he is “expected to give solutions to ‘10’ (the No.10 position)”.

In total, Carvalho has featured eight times for the Reds this season, with just three of those run-outs coming since Cooper took charge in September.

He made the move Trentside for a club record £13m fee in the summer of 2018, joining from Benfica on a five-year deal.

The Portuguese has made 75 appearances for Forest in the last four years, scoring eight goals.

Head coach Cooper has said he expects some outgoings this month, saying: “It’s normal that players go both ways. It’s just the way it is.

“I understand that for every time I pick a team, I disappoint a load of players.

“If that situation continues for a certain individual, I understand that it might be better to be playing somewhere else for their career - and sometimes even for us as a club.

“That’s normal. That will happen in every single window for every single team.

“It’s just going through that process, making sure that by the end of it, when the window shuts, we’ve got a squad of players we’re happy with, in terms of positions and talent, to go and do what we want to do.

“But we also want a group of players who are hungry and motivated to be here.

“We’re just trying to get the balance right with that.”
