Nottingham Forest ace affected as match called off

England Under-21s' fixture with Romania scheduled for Friday has been called off after two positive cases of coronavirus were identified.

Two cases were found among the group of players and staff with those affected immediately isolated according to England.

Their trip to Romania has been cancelled as a precaution.

Among the England U21 squad is Nottingham Forest's James Garner. The midfielder, currently on loan from Manchester United, has been based at St George's Park with the young Three Lions.

England's senior squad were also based at the Three Lions' training complex in Burton before they travelled to Hungary yesterday for their World Cup qualifier.

An FA statement said: "England men's under-21s will no longer travel to play Romania on Friday after two positive COVID-19 tests were reported within the party of players and support staff.

"It has been decided to cancel the trip as a precaution and our thanks go to the Romanian Football Federation for their understanding.

"The individuals concerned were immediately isolated from the rest of the group, with the squad still based at St. George's Park.

"The Young Lions' focus will switch to preparing for next Tuesday's home fixture with Kosovo at MK Dons to mark the start of qualifying for the 2023 UEFA European Under-21 Championship."

Forest return to action on Sunday, September 12, when they take on Cardiff City at the City Ground in the Championship.
