Nottingham fire: Everything we know about major incident at recycling plant

Firefighters have spent hours tackling a blaze at a recycling centre in Nottingham.

The fire broke out at Nottingham Recycling in Abbeyfield Road at around 2pm on Monday, January 31.

As many as 12 fire engines attended the incident, which prompted an asbestos warning by crews, as well as widespread traffic issues after a closure on the A52 Clifton Boulevard.

Thick plumes of black smoke could be seen from across Nottingham, with fire officials warning nearby residents to close their doors and windows.

The recycling facility, which mainly deals with cardboard, said none of its employees had been caught in the fire, and added that a full investigation into its cause would be carried out.

It is the fourth major fire to have started in the area in about a year.

Phil Holland, a resident in the area, told Nottinghamshire Live: "There have been three or four over here last year.

"I'm always walking round here. I could see the smoke and wondered what it was."

Cliff Kirby, a Boots worker who lives in Beeston, sent his drone up for an overhead look.

He added: "The main fire you can see burning through the building. It's a decent sized fire. I could see the smoke from Beeston and I thought it was McIntyre. There has been 3 before around McIntyre."

Firefighters are expected to be at the scene for a "considerable amount of time".

In its latest update, a spokesperson for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We are continuing to work closely with our partners to get this incident under control.

"We understand that this incident will have an impact on the wider community so thank you for being patient.

"We will be at this incident for a considerable amount of time."

The closure to the A52 between the A453 and A6005 in both directions caused delays for motorists and had an effect on public transport.

Nottingham City Transport buses were caught in the traffic jam, with Trentbarton services also being forced to divert.

A spokesperson for Nottingham Recycling said: “Thankfully there have been no injuries caused by the fire. A total of 11 people are employed at the facility, all of whom have been accounted for and are being looked after.

"The facility principally recycles corrugated cardboard.

“Once the fire has been extinguished there will be a full investigation into its cause.”
