Nottingham family hold funeral for 'one of a kind' 20-year-old Koi Carp

A 20-year-old Koi Carp was laid to rest at Nottingham's Pet Crematorium.

Owners of the West Bridgford crematorium said this was the first of its kind after delivering ceremonies for mice, rats, dogs, cats, and even tarantulas during lockdown.

The Koi Carp, which did not have a name, belonged to a man who had spent many hours looking after this "wonderful fish" at the Bestwood Park home he shared with his wife.

When her husband died, the 7-kilo fish continued to be cared for until its death last week.

It had lived for 20 years.

The pet crematorium said it has looked after all kinds of pets, but this was their first Koi Carp service.

The fish was laid to rest on Tuesday, February 16, on a traditional funeral bier in the Rainbow Bridge Marquee, which has been erected outside the main crematorium building.

It allows relatives more space to spend with their loved ones and to social distance.

Owner Rita Harbury-Carlisle said: "The owner called and wanted to have a cremation for the fish because it was very special. She brought the fish in and we put it on a funeral bier.

"We have been open 25 years and we have had fish previously but this is the first Koi Carp we have had in.

"We have had mice, rats, cats and dogs. Nothing is unusual for us because they are all very much loved by their owners.

"The husband had looked after the fish for 20 years. He had passed away and then the fish had passed away."

The fish was cremated and placed into a scattering box, and it is now up to the family what they want to do with the ashes.

Nottinghamshire Live contacted the family of the fish but they did not wish to comment any further.
