Nottingham families speak out about Bonfire Night cancellation

The annual fireworks display has been cancelled for the second year running due to Covid concerns and the inability to control the amount of people attending.

The popular event, organised in partnership with Mellors Group Events, was due to be staged at Forest Recreational Grounds on Friday, November 5.

Kate Tinsley, 37, mum of two, thinks because it is an outdoor event that it should have been given the green light.

She said: "I hadn't realised it had been cancelled but it is a real shame when everything else is opening up.

"I understand why but it is also an outdoor event for families.

"It's a shame about Goose Fair also.

"I guess the difference is with stadiums people have to prove they have negative tests but you can't do that with this."

The event usually attracts 40,000 people over a five-hour period.

Derek Cole, 30, father of three, thinks the display should go ahead.

He said: "We're now planning on heading to London instead but I don't think it should have been cancelled.

"People are allowed in stadiums and other events so it is a bit unfair.

"We last went the year before it was cancelled and we would definitely go again."

Public health and council chiefs have defended the decision to cancel the display.

Officials have explained the reasons for making decision, saying it was not possible put on a safe event in an environment that's difficult to manage, and that safety was the number one priority.

Martin McLoughlin, 59, unemployed, thinks the event is needed for families.

He said: "It is a great event for kids and should still happen.

"Covid restrictions are easing up everywhere now so I don't understand.

"I might go next year as I used to go when I was a child every year."
