Nottingham e-scooter survey finds majority want them gone after trial, despite never using one

A survey has found that most of Nottinghamshire Live readers want Nottingham's electric scooters to be gone for good after the trial period ends.

The survey carried out between September 8 and October 25 by Nottinghamshire Live found that 75 per cent of those questioned wanted the yellow scooters off Nottingham's streets.

Around 3000 people filled out the survey, most of whom (88 per cent) had never used the public use electric scooters.

But readers said they had various issues with the scooters being in the city, mainly citing what they saw as dangerous riding (43%), inconsiderate parking (24%) and the impact this was having on people with disabilities (13%).

However, 13 per cent of those asked said they had not experienced any issues as a result of the trial.

Some of the other feedback including concerns over schoolchildren using them, drunk riders and one comment that the only issue is 'miserable people complaining about scooters'.

The trial of the yellow e-scooter rental scheme was recently extended until the end of November next year.

The Department for Transport invited areas to extend trials to give more time to gather data and evaluate schemes in order to introduce new and improved safety measures that will improve the public perception of e-scooters.

The trial has not been popular with everyone, but is one of the most well used in the country, with the e-scooters used for 3,000 journeys per day by more than 2,000 people.

Since their introduction in October 2020, Nottingham's e-scooters been on more than 850,000 journeys, with over 35,000 registered users and over 1.3 million miles travelled.

Early findings show the e-scooters are being used across the city, between residential areas and in areas not served as well by public transport.

Research has found that many are now using the e-scooters for their daily commute, to travel to bus stops, and as an alternative to cars.
