Nottingham Covid rates now lower than rest of county

Covid infection rates are significantly lower in Nottingham compared to the rest of the county as UK cases reach an all-time high. Around one in every 13 people in the country currently have the virus, estimates the Office for National Statistics.

This equates to 4.9 million people, up from 4.3 million people the week before. The surge in infections is thought to be driven partly by the contagious Omicron BA.2 sub-variant and people mixing more after restrictions were eased.

As cases rise, the city of Nottingham has remained much lower in terms of case rates when compared to wider Nottinghamshire. There were 1,971 cases recorded in the week up until March 26, the most in the county, according the latest government figures.

However, due to its large population, it is in a much better position in terms of case rates per 100,000, meaning the virus is spreading less. There are 584.7 people with Covid per 100,000 in the city.

In comparison, the county's districts and boroughs all have a rate of more than 800. Mansfield has 964.8, Ashfield, 941.3, Broxtowe, 959.6, Rushcliffe, 931.5, Newark and Sherwood, 925.9, Gedling, 887.2 and Bassetlaw has 807.4.
