Nottingham council job cuts set to be confirmed next month

A city council meeting next month is expected to confirm the details of up to 153 compulsory job cuts.

In July, the council announced it would be cutting 153 jobs and offering voluntary redundancies.

Three trade unions, which have jointly lodged a formal dispute with the council, have said there could also be as many as 500 voluntary redundancies.

Other measures were also announced, including the closure of a day care centre for people with disabilities, some playgrounds and a charge of £25 for houses with a third parking permit.

Nottingham City Council is facing enormous pressure on its budget.

It has written off £24 million in debt to its energy company, Robin Hood Energy amid claims of ‘institutional blindness’ about the financial position of the company.

The collapse of retail giant Intu means the council has said it is ‘unlikely’ it will get back all of the £17 million it invested in the Broadmarsh project.

On top of that is the huge financial pressure from Covid, with dozens of events cancelled, sharply decreased income and a rise in demand for some services.

It is not clear whether this round of budget cuts will be the last this year - the council estimated last month it would have a budget shortfall, in part from Covid, of £87.9 million by April next year. To date the council has received £23.5 million from the Government.

The city council has today said the budget cuts - which had to be put out to formal consultation - is expected to be finalised in a meeting of the Executive Board on Tuesday, September 22.
