Nottingham Comic Con cancelled 'with a heavy heart' for second year running

The Nottingham Comic Convention has been cancelled for the second year running.

Hundreds of people typically attend the annual event which is held in October at the Nottingham Conference Centre.

The event is held for fans of graphic novels, comics and films who rock up in all-manner of spectacular cosplay, from legendary Star Wars characters such as Boba Fett, Doctor Who and many more comic book heroes and villains from throughout the ages.

Stalls are also set up selling merchandise and handmade items, as well as back issues of comic books and zines from established publishers and independent artists, including graphic novel artists from DC and Marvel.

Nottingham Comic Convention also raises money for charity, with £1 of every adult ticket sale given to good causes, with thousands raised over the years.

It returned in 2019 having had immense success in 2018 but was cancelled last year amid the coronavirus pandemic, when infection rates in Nottingham were some of the highest in the UK.

Organisers have now revealed, despite most restrictions being eased, the event will be cancelled again for the safety of all those who attend and volunteer.

A statement on the Nottingham Comic Con Facebook page reads: "Apologies for the radio silence. It has been a rough year since the last event (as if has for many) and although we have taken some weeks way this summer to rest and assess, we have been in discussion with various partners to look at the best way to move forward with Nottingham Comic Con and we are now able to update you.

"It is with a heavy heart that we have to announce the cancellation of this year's event. We really missed seeing everyone last year and were really hoping that we cold be at a place for this year's event to happen.

"Although the majority of restrictions in the UK have been lifted, Covid is still having an impact and there are still a lot of uncertainties about events, so after very careful consideration we have had to make the decision to not go ahead.

"As a family (and team) we are gutted that it has come to this again but the safety and well-being of our exhibitors, visitors and volunteers had to come first.

"We will be back (pending no further worldwide issues) on October 29, 2022.

"We are sorry that this may not be what you were hoping for but thank you for your understanding and support in this and we will endeavour to bring you a great event in 2022 and we look for ward to seeing you.

"Please do continue to support comic creators and the small press scene, it will be back in full force soon."
