Nottingham College strike suspended at the eleventh hour

Strikes scheduled to resume at Nottingham College on Tuesday have been suspended after an 11th-hour meeting of staff.

Members of the University and College Union (UCU) were due to walk out for 14 days this month but have agreed to suspend the action for two weeks so that they can consider a new offer from the college.

Staff fear that new contracts include cuts to holiday entitlement and some having to take a pay cut.

UCU members at the college walked out for 15 days in September and October and passed votes of no confidence in their chief executive and chairman of  governors.

Andrew Harden, UCU head of further education, said: "Industrial action is always a last resort but the college’s refusal to negotiate in good faith had left staff with no alternative.

"We are pleased the college appears to finally recognise the need to work with its staff and not against them.

"We would like to thank all the students, councillors and local people that have supported our fight for fair pay and conditions.

"Our members have demonstrated that they will not be taken for fools and are prepared to take strike action to defend their jobs. The ball is now firmly in the college’s court and it needs to deliver on its promises."

The college had asked Acas (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) to mediate in the dispute.

A spokesman for the college said: "Over the last few weeks, regular discussions have continued between the college and the teachers’ union, UCU (University and College Union), in an attempt to end the strike.

"The college has made further concessions on pay, workload, professional development days, holiday and sick pay," the spokesman said.

"Plans are in place to work with staff and students to catch up on missed learning and ensure that students can achieve their qualifications.

"All college sites are open as usual from Tuesday 5 November."
