Nottingham City Council has released a statement after an Omicron Variant case of Covid was found in Nottingham.

The Health Secretary announced on Saturday, November 27 that the government has been made aware of two cases in Nottingham and in Essex.

The city council says it is working closely with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to investigate and ensure testing is completed.

Local directors of public health have urged the public to wear face coverings and get tested if you have symptoms.

Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council Directors for Public Health, Lucy Hubber and Jonathan Gribbin said: "UKHSA are leading the ongoing investigation into the confirmed Omicron variant case in Nottingham and we are working closely with them to ensure that all appropriate actions to identify close contacts and arrange testing are completed.

"There are things we can all do to keep ourselves and others safe.

"Please follow the Government instruction to wear a face covering on public transport and in shops and we would strongly advise also in crowded or indoor settings. In addition, try to keep your distance from people not in your household.

"If you have symptoms, no matter how mild, get a PCR test and use the rapid tests before you mix with others. It is never too late to get the vaccine – book online at https://www.nhs.uk/."

In a briefing to the public, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said: "This variant is spreading around the world with two cases identified in the UK. It is very clear Omicron spreads rapidly."

He also announced there will be a tightening up of face mask rules in shops and public transport and a real push on the government's booster vaccine campaign, with more people set to be offered jabs sooner.

PCR tests will also be required for anyone who wishes to enter the country upon arrival, and travellers will be asked to self-isolate until they receive a negative test.

These new rules will be reviewed in three weeks time.
