Nottingham City Council on the rules you need to follow when going to the tip

Nottingham City Council is urging people to keep storing waste at home safely if they can, ahead of the restart of some waste services.

The council’s household waste and recycling centre at Redfield Road, Lenton, is to re-open and its bulky waste service will restart on Monday, May 18.

The authority's garden waste bin collection service will also begin again from Tuesday, May 26.

Councillor Sally Longford, deputy leader and portfolio holder for energy, environment and democratic services at Nottingham City Council, said: “We are pleased to be able to reopen our waste centre and restart our bulky waste collection service to help city households manage their waste during the Covid-19 pandemic.

“However, due to expected demand, we are asking city residents to restrict their use of these services and store waste safely at home if they can continue to do so.

“We are expecting queues at our Redfield Road site and will have traffic management arrangements in place to keep the roads and highway clear. So please only visit if you really have to. If you do turn up, please expect lengthy delays.

“Residents are also advised to look at the restrictions on both services which have been put in place to protect residents and our staff.”

Members of the public should not visit the tip if they are:

  • Extremely vulnerable and are remaining at home for shielding purposes
  • Symptomatic with coronavirus
  • In a 14-day household isolation
  • Should if possible wear gloves and face masks and as a minimum hand sanitise before and after using the site.

The site will only be accepting garden waste, cardboard, paper, wood, metals, waste electrical and electronic equipment and general household/bulky waste.

This reduction in material types is to ensure social distancing measures are followed, allowing the site to operate safely and move people through as safely and quickly as possible.

The centre will not be accepting rubble, brick, plasterboard or gas bottles.

Opening hours are 10am to 6pm, seven days a week.

No appointment is necessary but people should be prepared to queue or be turned away if demand is too great or cars are blocking the roads, the city council added.

Cars should have no more than two people in them and a driver’s licence must be shown to prove city residency.

The centre is not accepting any vans or trailers, regardless of any exemption letter that the driver may hold.

On-site staff will not be able to assist people with heavy or bulky items.

Members of the public should only bring items they can safely unload and manage themselves or with one other occupant of the car.

Six other tips across Nottinghamshire are also reopening from Monday, May 18.

Nottinghamshire County Council announced the reopening of six tips in the county including Beeston, Bilsthorpe, Calverton, Hucknall, Newark and Worksop Recycling Centres.
