Nottingham City Council explains why cemetery was closed on Christmas Day

Nottingham City Council has explained why one of the city's biggest cemeteries was locked on Christmas Day.

Church Cemetery, also known as Rock Cemetery, was closed on December 25, meaning visitors were not able to place flowers on their loved ones' graves.

One reader told Nottinghamshire Live they felt "disappointed" to find the cemetery, in Forest Road East, was locked on Christmas Day after reading on the city council's website that it would be open.

They said they arrived at the same time as another couple who expected it would be open.

A spokesperson at Nottingham City Council said: "We had staff cover in place to make sure Rock Cemetery was open between 10am and 3pm, but unfortunately this person was taken ill on Christmas Day morning. It was unfortunately too late at this point to arrange alternative cover."
