Nottingham city centre car park will need £200k of improvements because of damaged electrics

More than £200,000 will be spent on essential electrical works at a city centre car park.

Nottingham City Council has agreed the spend on the Lace Market Car Park to meet health and safety requirements.

A report from the authority outlined the reasons for the measures.

"Due to water ingress over many years, water has corroded and damaged the electrical circuit and conduit within the car park.

"This has now resulted in no lighting on several decks," it read.

"For health, safety and fire compliance regulations reasons this work has had to start."

It comes after Nottinghamshire Live reported in April that the car park, on the corner of Pilcher Gate and Fletcher Gate, had closed for around six months to allow for structural repairs.

The council report added: "The car park is currently closed for other essential structural maintenance, giving the opportunity to undertake these works without an extended closure and loss of further income.

"The risks for customers and staff are considerable if this work is left undone and it leaves the council open to insurance claims if not dealt with promptly.

"During the Covid-19 epidemic it will be important to provide citizens with a safe place to park when they are being encouraged to use their own vehicles rather than public transport options.

"This will help support the city's economic regeneration as the car park is located in the heart of shopping, leisure and historic areas."
