Nottingham city centre brought to a standstill by protests

Hundreds of people have brought Nottingham city centre to a standstill.

Two groups of protesters are in Nottingham city centre on Saturday, August 22.

Reports suggest one of the groups aims to highlight "veterans and children and to bring awareness of the plight of veterans".

They met at London Road, by the BBC building, and marched through Canal Street, Maid Marian Way, and Parliament Street to Market Square.

Police kept them apart from other campaigners who met in Market Square today. But pictures show the large number of protesters has brought the city centre to a standstill

Large numbers of police are in the city centre and are preventing the groups of protesters from meeting.

At around 1.30pm, police were advising the public to stay away from the city centre.

A spokesman said: "Police are responding to a protest in Old Market Square and Clumber Street. The public are advised to stay away from the area."

Road were closed by police as protesters made their way through the city.

Police had set up barriers to keep the groups apart in Market Square. However, crowds have since spilled onto Clumber Street.

Reports from the scene suggests  hundreds of people have descended on to the city centre.

The police helicopter has now been seen hovering over the city centre.

Earlier, officers from the Metropolitan Police Force were also seen at the scene, alongside Nottinghamshire officers.
