Nottingham chippy Cod's Scallops will be selling battered Creme Eggs this Easter

A Nottingham chippy which brought us deep-fried Brussels sprouts at Christmas is launching a chocolate-lovers' treat in time for Easter.

The award-winning Cod's Scallops will be selling battered Cadbury's Creme Eggs at its shops in Bramcote, Wollaton, and Long Eaton in Derbyshire.

Available from April 1 to April 20, the calorific treat has split opinion on the chip shop's Facebook page.

Will Hobson described it as "a piece of heaven" and Janice Smith Wragg said: "Gotta try one."

But Kayleigh Berrington posted: "Looks horrible" while Julie Dewar agreed: "Ew! I will stick with your lovely fish and chips."

Supervisor Sam Reeve, who is based at the Wollaton shop in Bramcote Lane, thought it would be a good idea to add them to the menu.

After several attempts she came up with a tried and tested method, making sure they weren't overcooked and that the milk chocolate shell didn't burn. The result is crispy golden batter and soft gooey chocolate and fondant.

"I think I have had my fill of Creme Eggs for this year," she said. "I don't know how many calories it is but it's a treat and a bit of fun. I've had a deep-fried Mars Bar before and thought 'why not have a go with a Creme Egg?'"

Sam, who was responsible for battered sprouts over the festive period, said customers were quite adventurous and enjoyed trying new products.

"People come here to try new things. The sprouts did really well - I was surprised. I think it's the kind of thing that divides people. Some will love it and some people will hate it.

"I love experimenting and often batter various foods. I love vegetables and tried battered tenderstem broccoli and curry sauce one day after work."

Cod's Scallops owner John Molnar said: "It's the first time we've done them. I went out and bought 400 Creme Eggs from Tesco.

"I'm sure they'll be a great success. Anything deep-fried is amazing isn't it? It's a great treat."

When eating in the egg will be served with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce, costing £4 and the takeaway version with ice cream will be £3.
