Nottingham chip shop steps in to help feed the homeless after government support ends

The UK's number one fish and chip shop has stepped in to help feed homeless people after government support came to an end.

Nottingham-based, the Cod's Scallops, will be providing a hot meal for 22 people currently housed in a hotel in Mansfield Road during lockdown.

The group were previously being supported by the government when the UK was thrown into lockdown, however, yesterday the funding for food stopped.

John Molnar and his team will be providing a chippy tea every Saturday night for around ten weeks from the chip shop in Carrington.

He said: "It’s tough out there for all of us, however for those without a home it’s worse than ever. A hot meal at the end of the day can be a real saviour, it’s the least we can do to help.”

Also coming to the rescue and helping to provide food are SAFE, The Friary, Guru Nanak's Mission, Sewa Day, BlindEye, Meet Eat & Greet and the Red Cross.

Up until yesterday (June 18) the government had been funding breakfast, lunch and dinner for the homeless since lockdown began as part of the Covid-19 Everyone In policy.

Sharron Spowage of SAFE (Supporting Arms Feeding Everyone) said: "I have co-ordinated a seven-day rota to put together food every single day in that hotel and another one for on-street support."

SAFE has been helping to feed rough sleepers throughout the pandemic, thanks to donations from food charity Neighbourly and Fareshare, and its base at the Salvation Army in King Edward's Street will be opening next week for takeaway.
