Nottingham Carnival cancelled due to rise in coronavirus cases and the 'pingdemic'

The 2021 Nottingham Carnival has been cancelled due to self-isolation fears and the growing number of coronavirus cases.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson this evening confirmed Test and Trace would remain in place after 'Freedom Day' meaning anyone "pinged" will still have to isolate.

And while coronavirus restrictions have been eased off, there have been another 258 cases across Nottingham today, bringing the total to 37,677 since last March.

The carnival organisers have now taken the decision to cancel the event, fearing volunteers having to self-isolate could leave them without enough people.

Chief executive Richard Renwick said: "The decision has been taken in the light of the increasing number of people being tested as positive for Covid-19 and having to isolate as a consequence.

"This is very likely to affect our ability to ensure that we have enough staff and volunteers on the day to enable a safe event as well as potentially impacting on our amazing costume designers, parade participants and other entertainers without whom there is no fantastic carnival.

"We will be exploring ways in which we can still bring you some live carnival entertainment before the end of the year, if feasible to do so, please look out for those details. In the meantime please keep yourselves safe."
