Nottingham cafe owners astounded as people try to book tables during lockdown

Cafe owners are being left puzzled by customers attempting to book tables amid the Covid-19 lockdown.

Restaurants, pubs, bars and cafes have been closed since March 20 following the Government's order for people to stay at home in a bid to stem the spread of coronavirus.

But it hasn't stopped some food and drink lovers trying to get a reservation - even though there's no one there to serve them.

Madhatters Tea Room in Kimberley had a message asking for a table for six next Saturday for a birthday afternoon tea.

Owner Nygel Stevenson was taken aback. He said: "I couldn't believe it. My reply was polite and it did seem genuine but you never know."

After posting it on his Facebook page, other business owners said they'd had similar baffling and unacceptable requests.

It left his stunned friends asking: "Have they not seen the news?"

Mr Stevenson, who has run the tea room in St James Street for just over eight years, said: "Seeing my friends' replies in my post makes me realise I am not alone. It’s scary that we aren’t trading but we have to stay safe.

"It's a very weird time we are living in."

Shaima Swift, who runs The Crimson Tree in Mansfield Road, Sherwood, was equally surprised when someone asked for a reservation in a couple of weeks' time.

She said: "It was just so frustrating as she really had no clue. I also had someone else asking to buy stuff from me to assist her in starting a cake business. Sometimes, people just stun me."

It isn't just cafes where customers don't seem to understand what lockdown actually means - staying at home unless you're a key worker, only leaving the house to shop for essentials, to attend a medical appointment or for daily exercise.

Nottinghamshire Live has also been told of an individual who had a booking request for their apartment in Spain - and they wanted to check in at the weekend.

Meanwhile, a beautician told us they had people asking for lashes while another had messages from customers wanting their nails done if she can sneak them into their home salon.
