Nottingham bar Albert's won't be reopening anytime soon - student flats could replace it

The doors of Nottingham city centre bar Albert's haven't reopened after lockdown restrictions were eased - and they're not likely to anytime soon.

The hangout and live music venue, in the heart of student land in Goldsmith Street, is currently without a tenant.

Contrary to the usual trend, there has been no 'heavy heart' announcement about the closure on social media.

Owners at nearby Indian restaurant Mogul E Azam said they are "looking at options."

One option is to reopen it themselves, another to find a new tenant. The third is to turn it into student accommodation.

"Let's see in a few months," they said.

Music lovers are mourning the loss of yet another venue as a growing number disappear from the city, such as The Maze, in Mansfield Road, where work has begun to convert the iconic site into student flats.

Grey Hairs, who toured with Sleaford Mods, launched their third album Health & Social Care at Albert's last August.

Gigs lined up for later this year have even been cancelled or moved. One music producer, who asked not to be named, said he was worried about the unprecedented threat facing grassroots music venues.

"We're deeply concerned for our industry and for all those that work it in," he said.

When it opened in September 2018 Albert's promised video games, live music and pints for as little as £2.80.

There was also come cracking food for a time when Smiffy's Smokehouse had a kitchen pop-up at the bar last year.

Previously the venue was called Spanky Van Dyke's, which went out with a bang on New Year's Eve 2017, after seven years.

There was dismay when the "eatery and funhouse" announced the end of Spanky's.
