Nottingham and Nottinghamshire will be placed under Tier 4 restrictions, it has been confirmed.
Simon Greaves, leader of Bassetlaw District Council, confirmed the news in a Tweet ahead of an announcement by Matt Hancock in the Commons.
He said: "Bassetlaw is to be placed into Tier 4 along with the rest of Nottinghamshire from the beginning of Thursday, December 31."
Councillor Rebecca Langton, of Nottingham City Council, also Tweeted the news, saying: "Nottingham and all of the East Midlands, except Rutland to be placed in Tier 4 from Thursday December 31.
"Almost all of the country will be in Tier 3 or 4, with no one in Tier 2 and only the Isles of Scilly in Tier 1."
The announcement comes as part of the Government's review to the Tiering system, which is expected to see a large number of areas moved into the toughest Tier 4 restrictions.
The news means stricter social gathering restrictions across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.
It comes despite latest data which showed that Covid-19 infection rates across all parts of the city and county were below the national average.
Council leaders spoke out prior to the announcement with a hope that the county would avoid Tier 4 restrictions, calling for "common sense to prevail".
When the Tiering system returned following the second national lockdown, the Government pledged to review allocations every two weeks.
It means the next review should take place on or around January 13, 2021.
