Nottingham and Nottinghamshire R-rate ahead of next phase of roadmap on May 17

Nottingham and Nottinghamshire's estimated R-rate has been confirmed ahead of the next phase of lockdown easing on Monday, May 17.

The next stage in the easing of restrictions is days away, when hospitality businesses will be able to open indoors and most outdoor restrictions could be lifted - although gatherings of more than 30 people will still be illegal.

The R-rate, or reproductive rate for Covid, indicates how many extra virus cases are found from one individual positive test.

It calculates the average number of secondary infections produced by a single infected person.

Officials in Nottinghamshire confirmed at the end of April that the way the county's R-rate was being calculated had changed.

It had previously been reviewed on a weekly basis, however, this is now talking place fortnightly.

It means that, at present, the county's R-rate currently stands at between 0.8 and 1.0.

An R-rate between 0.8 and 1.0 means that, on average, every 10 people infected will infect between 8 and 10 other people.

The estimates represent the transmission of the virus over the past few weeks due to the time delay between someone being infected, developing symptoms, and needing healthcare.

It comes after a Downing Street briefing on Friday confirmed that the country's overall R-rate had increased to between 0.8 and 1.1, influenced by rising cases of the emerging Indian variant.

Public Health England data shows that 173 cases of strains from the Indian mutation have been detected across the East Midlands.

It is unclear at this stage exactly how many have been confirmed in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, however, target testing of more than 1,600 people took place in the city this week.

It is understood that the Indian variant is making the current Kent strain, which ravaged through England during the winter, "less dominant" in Nottingham city.

It comes as Boris Johnson confirmed second doses of the vaccine will be brought forward to protect against the Indian variant.
