Nottingham ales pick up awards at Great British Beer Festival

Local beers have won awards at the Great British Beer Festival in London, a huge annual event that attracts over 40,000 people and runs for five days.

On the opening day (August 6) organisers CAMRA announced the winners of the Champion Beer of Britain competition and it included two Nottingham ales.

Giltbrook brewery Blue Monkey picked up silver in the Speciality category for its Chocolate Guerilla, while city-based Castle Rock Brewery won joint bronze in the Best Bitter category for its Preservation Fine Ale, sharing the gong with Darwin’s Origin by the Salopian Brewery in Shrewsbury.

The festival, featuring over a thousand beers, ciders, perries, wines and gins, runs at the Olympia in London until Saturday.

The overall Champion Beer of Britain award went to Surrey Hills’ Shere Drop.

Derby's Dancing Duck picked up gold for its Ay Up bitter.

The awards are decided through tasting panels throughout the year followed by regional heats.

Nick Antona, CAMRA's national chairman, said: "The awards are part of the highest beer accolade in the country and a huge testament to the fantastic beers coming out of the Midlands.”
