Nottingham actress Vicky McClure and drama Sherwood nominated for BAFTAs

Nottingham actress Vicky McClure has been nominated in the biggest British TV awards for her role in the locally filmed TV drama Without Sin. The star is up for Leading Actress in the BAFTAs alongside the crème de la crème in the acting world.

Vicky tweeted: "I. Can. Not. Believe. This!" as the nominees were announced. Other contenders are Billie Piper (I Hate Suzie Too), Imelda Staunton (The Crown), Kate Winslet (I Am Ruth), Maxine Peake (Anne) and Sarah Lancashire (Julia).

The Wollaton-born actress played the part of Stella Tomlinson, a grieving mother who meets the man accused of murdering her daughter in the psychological thriller. It's not the first time Vicky triumphed at the BAFTAs (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). In 2011 she was crowned best actress for her role as Lorraine "Lol" Jenkins in This Is England '86.

In a separate category BBC series Sherwood has been nominated for best drama. Also in the running are Bad Sisters, The Responder, and Somewhere Boy.

The drama, which was written by Nottinghamshire-born writer James Graham, was inspired by two murders which took place near the village of Annesley Woodhouse and sparked a huge manhunt by Nottinghamshire Police. Two of the stars are also up for awards.

Adeel Akhtar, whose character Andy Fisher hides in the forest after killing his son’s wife, is nominated for Supporting Actor. Lesley Manville is a nominee for Supporting Actress for her part of Julie Jackson, the wife of a former miner, who was on the side of the strikes in the 1980s.

The ceremony takes place on May 14. Other nominations include The Traitors (Reality and constructed factual), Ant and Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway (Entertainment programme) and the state funeral of HM Queen Elizabeth II (Live event).
