Nottingham Academy sends pupils from 2 year groups home due to positive coronavirus cases

An academy in Nottingham has confirmed a number of coronavirus cases within the school.

Nottingham Academy, in Greenwood Road, Sneinton, has been forced to partially close its Year 9 group, while a staffing shortage due to self-isolation rules has led to the complete closure of Year 10.

The closures were put in place as of Monday, June 28.

A spokeswoman for the academy said: "The health, safety and well-being of our pupils, staff and the wider school community is our top priority which is why, after confirming positive cases of Covid-19 within the academy, we acted immediately to ensure the necessary steps and precautions were taken.

"Our contact tracing and robust health, safety and hygiene measures, together with our close partnership with the local health authority and Public Health England, has allowed us to effectively respond to the increasing number of cases throughout our local area.

"As part of this, we have taken the decision to partially close Year 9 from this morning. As a result of staff shortages, due to the latest self-isolation advice, we have also taken the decision to close to Year 10 from this evening."

On Monday June 28, cases were also confirmed at St Peter's C of E Junior School in Ruddington and Forest Fields Primary and Nursery School in Nottingham.

According to Nottingham's director of public health, Lucy Hubber, roughly 1,299 pupils from city schools are now in self-isolation.

This was a significant increase over last week when there were around 927 pupils isolating.

The spokeswoman for Nottingham Academy added: "We plan to welcome these year groups back on July 5 and will remain in regular contact with parents.

"As always, we are committed to ensuring all our pupils receive the best possible education and, as such, have activated our remote learning plan to minimise any disruption as much as possible."
