Notting Hill Carnival 2019: Locals board up homes and gardens as neighbourhood prepares for Bank Holiday street party

Residents in west London have started boarding up their homes and gardens in anticipation of the Notting Hill Carnival.

The annual street event, which kicks off on Sunday morning, is Europe's biggest street party and contributes £100m to the local economy.

It is expected to attract hundreds of thousands of people to dance through the streets of west London, listen to steel bands and see the world-famous closing parade.

It is the second year that the carnival has been organised by a new board of directors.

People have been seen putting up boards in preparation for the event.

Kensington and Chelsea council say they have robust damage control measures in place this year and are bringing in 500 compostable toilets.

A street cleaning service has also been organised, where cleaners will be working around the clock to clear up rubbish from the Notting Hill area.

Notting Hill Carnival commences at 6am on Sunday, August 25.

The West London route will circle an area between Westbourne Park and Ladbroke Grove tube stations, as it has done in previous years.
