Notre Dame tight end Alize Jones to miss season for academic reasons

Notre Dame suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday, three days before its first practice.

Sophomore tight end Alize Jones will miss the entire 2016 season for failing to meet academic responsibilities, Jones said in a tweeted statement.

Jones will be permitted to practice with the team but won't be allowed to play in games, per Irish coach Brian Kelly.

"I'm disappointed at myself, but I'm going to make the best of this situation," Jones said.

Jones said he will remain a student at Notre Dame and will "grow" from this experience.

"While I won't be able to help my brothers on Saturdays, I'll do whatever I can to help this team achieve its goal of winning a national championship," he said.

The 6-foot-4, 245-pounder from Las Vegas spent some time at receiver during spring practice. He played in all 13 games last season, including five starts, and had 13 catches for 190 yards.

The Irish begin camp Saturday.
