These shocking before and after images show the damage caused by a catastrophic fire at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Four hundred firefighters tackled the historic blaze on Monday, battling to stop it wreaking complete destruction of the treasured facade after flames torched the roof, sending its spire crashing to the ground before crowds of horrified Parisians.

Two police officers and one firefighter were injured during the blaze, which saw teams fight to save the structure of the 850-year-old Gothic masterpiece and the priceless artefacts it housed.

Dramatic before and after images now show the extent of the damage suffered by the 12th-century cathedral, with its 315ft spire shown in all its glory months before it collapsed in the fire.

Another shows Notre Dame's pristine interior filled with a smouldering pile of what appeared to be the charred remains of the roof and spire smoking in front of the altar.

Although the cathedral was significantly damaged, a cross can also be seen intact before and after the fire, escaping the destruction as it continued to glow from within the gloom.

Flames engulfed the world-famous cathedral in Paris shortly before 6pm on Monday, soon toppling its spire and threatening the entire wooden frame of the building.

The blaze moved through the cathedral, ravaging two-thirds of the roof and spreading to one of the two rectangular towers which formed its famous frontage.

Paris Fire Service later confirmed that Notre Dame's structure and main works of art have been saved.
