Paris's Notre Dame Cathedral spire collapses in huge fire at iconic building

A fire has broken out at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

Plumes of smoke can be seen pouring out of the building.

The fire department has said a major operation is ongoing and the area is being cleared.

French President Emmanuel Macron has cancelled his planned address to the nation as the cathedral continues to burn.

The leader wrote on Twitter: "Our Lady of Paris in flames. Emotion of a whole nation. Thought for all Catholics and for all French.

"Like all our countrymen, I'm sad tonight to see this part of us burn."

Live video footage and multiple photos posted on Twitter show flames leaping from the landmark, as heavy plumes of smoke billow from the centuries-old building.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, as Paris firefighters evacuate the area to fight the inferno.

"Our priority is putting the fire out before working out what caused it," said an emergency services spokesman.

It is the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Paris, and is visited by some 12million people every year.
