Aug. 05--Greg Bryant didn't make the grades off the field this offseason. As a result, the Notre Dame redshirt sophomore running back won't have the opportunity to make them on it this football season.
Bryant's father, also named Greg Bryant, told Scout.com that his son was ruled academically ineligible.
"There are certain expectations within our program that must be met on a daily basis," Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said in a statement Tuesday. "Quite simply, Greg did not meet those expectations."
Bryant, a five-star recruit who already had been suspended for the first four games of the season for violating team rules, has 303 yards and three touchdowns on 57 carries in 15 career games, including a personal-best 79 yards on seven carries last season against USC. The 5-foot-10, 205-pounder was expected to compete for playing time this year with Tarean Folston, C.J. Prosise and freshmen Josh Adams and Dexter Williams.
The school said Bryant will remain on scholarship and will be permitted to practice with the team. The Irish open camp Friday in Culver, Ind., and begin the season Sept. 5 at home against Texas.
Kelly also said junior linebacker Michael Deeb and junior tight end Mike Heuerman have been medically disqualified from playing this season.
