Notre Dame cathedral fire: Westminster Abbey bells toll to mark 24 hours since devastating inferno began

Westminster Abbey’s bells tolled to mark 24 hours since the devastating fire broke out at Notre Dame cathedral.

The bells at the London landmark rang out on Tuesday afternoon in a show solidarity with France.

Tourist and Londoners gathered outside Westminster Abbey to hear the bells chime at 4.43pm GMT (5.43pm in France).

Mike Denis, 34, lives in Normandy and is on a week's holiday with his wife and two young children in London.

After he heard that Westminster Abbey would ring its bells for Notre Dame, he brought his family to stand outside and listen.

He said: "We felt sad, because it is the patrimony of France. It's a part of France, the whole history. France has built herself around the Notre Dame de Paris, and that's why we're here tonight.

"It's a really kind thing, to do that. It's empathetic. We appreciate all these things coming from around the world.

Fred Hamon and his family are on holiday in London, but live in Grenoble, in south-eastern France.

Mr Hamon said: "I saw Notre Dame on the news. We don't know why it's happened. It's a pity. We will rebuild it, but I don't I know if I will be alive when it will be done.

"I wasn't aware the bell would ring. We said we go inside to pray for the rebuilding of Notre Dame, but it's closed.

"It's a good idea to give support. I know the Archbishop of Canterbury has already said he supports the French for what happened, so it's good to see some friendship between us. We don't care about the Brexit.

"This is democracy. We are together with the same values, and to have support when this has happened, it's good to hear that."

More than 600 million euros has been pledged by French billionaires and companies to help repair the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris which was ravaged by fire on Monday night.
