Notorious Rest and Be Thankful road closed amid landslide fears as Scotland braces for stormy weather

Motorists are facing a detour and potential delays after engineers closed the A83 at the Rest and Be Thankful.

The busy Argyll and Bute road has been shut as the region is expected to be battered by torrential rain and strong winds on Wednesday.

The route has been blighted with landslides in recent weeks with 6,000 tonnes of sludge falling onto the carriageway during a storm in August.

Similar mudslides took place at the beginning of September

Travellers will be redirected onto the Old Military Road instead while workers continue to monitor the site.

Traffic Scotland said: “Due to worsening weather conditions in the area all traffic is now being diverted via the Old Military Road local diversion route as a safety precaution, with the A83 closed at the Rest.

“Geotechnical teams are onsite monitoring conditions in the area.”

Large swathes of the west coast of Scotland are bracing themselves for stormy weather today after the Met Office put a yellow warning in place.

The amber alert came into effect at 3am and will remain in place until 12pm.

The central belt, Lothian and Borders and southwest Scotland stand to be the worst hit by the deluge.

The alert also covers Dumfries and Galloway, Strathclyde, East Ayrshire and South Ayrshire.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency has issued two flood alerts.
