Notorious A555 Airport Relief Road floods again after heavy downpours

A busy road besieged with flooding problems has been deluged with water once again after heavy downpours.

The A555 Airport Relief Road in Handforth was closed by police last night and has remained shut today.

The road has continually flooded after spells of heavy rain since the £290m route, which links Hazel Grove to the airport, was completed in 2018.

A leading councillor previously admitted the problem may never be solved.

Pictures this morning show the road flooded at the Wilmslow Road overbridge.

An independent investigation into the disastrous floods that hit Stockport in the summer of 2019 previously revealed that ‘design shortcomings’ meant the road would ‘remain vulnerable to flooding from prolonged or frequent heavy rainfall’.

The road flooded a number of times in 2019, and was closed more recently in January.

Stockport council's economy and regeneration chief Coun David Meller was asked about the problem at a town hall meeting that month.

He said: “It’s incredibly frustrating. Work is still ongoing on looking at potential medium-term solutions.

"But we have to be honest, we don’t know what is possible in terms of engineering, but we are continuing to do that work.”

Responding to questioning he added: “I’m very, very keen to have a solution in place as quickly as possible.

“We are working with Morgan Sindall (the firm that built the road) to look at ways in which we can address this once and for all in terms of looking at engineering solutions that are possible. That work is ongoing.

“The problem is I don’t know what solutions are available. I know council officers are working closely with Morgan Sindall.

"As it stands we still don’t know what’s in the realm of possibility and we also don’t know - if it is possible, how much it would cost."
