'Nothing is definite' - Lee Johnson updates on where Bristol City stand with Ashley Williams

After back to back Championship wins and a first victory since 2011 at Pride Park, some Robins supporters may feel that another centre-back is not required at Ashton Gate currently.

But that might be short-sighted with injuries continually afflicting the Bristol City squad, with question marks hanging over Adam Nagy's ankle, and with the Robins also lacking strength in depth at the back.

With Wales captain Ashley Williams pictured at the Derby County ground on Tuesday night and wearing a City tracksuit no less (see below), it looks as if a deal will be agreed soon.

And head coach Lee Johnson explained exactly where the Robins are with the potential signing of the 34-year-old defender, who posed for pictures ahead of Tuesday's match, that saw a 1-2 win courtesy of first-half goals from Andi Weimann and Josh Brownhill.

"The situation with Ashley is that there’s nothing definite. We’ve had him in and we’ve tested him," said Johnson following the fine Bristol City victory.

"We’ve had a look at him and he’s had a look at us. Both have got to make a decision.

"We haven’t gone into negotiations or anything like that. His body fat’s good.

"I said to him you’re not on trial but your hips are on trial. After all the testing we’ve done we’ll just see where we are.

"We’re quite relaxed about it. We’ll see where we get to at the back end of the week," explained the head coach.

Meanwhile, on the performance that saw the Robins edge past a side that could be a rival promotion contender this season, the City head coach refused to pick any of his players out.

"It's really difficult to single out individuals," said Johnson as we asked about that youthful central midfield.

"I thought it was a really good team performance.

"They've done it with aplomb. It's fantastic really that that gives us a chance in every game and then I truly believe that as we grow as a team the boys will have the quality," he said.
