There are many good things about living in the country, such as I do. One of them is the number of farmers’ markets. I tend to go early, a great time to sample breakfast pastries, not so conducive to trying booze. Plus, I’m not really a drinker these days since my fizz was very possibly spiked in 2022 (take care out there kids). But last month, at a farmers’ market, I tried some Richer Punch au Rhum Cacao (£12, 200ml). I felt immediately drawn to it the moment the man behind the stall said it was made using cocoa husks from Tosier chocolate. In fact, seeing the name Tosier attached to anything makes me feel safe. If you love rum and you like chocolate, this is a great bottle to get in for the festive season (Christmas is one of my favourite times of year, there will be many mentions, steady yourselves). It apparently makes for a great espresso Martini, but I also think a tot would be perfect in just an espresso to make it corretto.
I’d long been on the hunt for Manilife Cocoa Dusted Peanuts (£3.39, 75g) and I finally found some. They were delicious and very, very moreish, but be warned that they are also coated in sugar, so not quite the healthy snack you might think.
Last month, I also went to the Speciality & Fine Food Fair. I have much to report from there, but I had an early test of Chocolarder’s fabulous 50% Dominican Republic Milk with Cornish Seasalt and Rosemary (£6.65, 70g). It’s part of a limited seasonal edition and one of the most exciting launches of the autumn: it’s the sort of thing that will sell out, so don’t hesitate too long. Delicious with a lingering savoury tang of the rosemary. Perfect for autumn.
