I’m in London, with hard things to do. Where once I had nine family members in the capital, now there are none. It’s wrong to eat your feelings, except sometimes it helps.
I struggle to go into the supermarket my mum and dad used to shop at, as a feeling of dread always comes over me and the shelves seem filled with sadness. So, when I came upon a display of something new at the checkout, something that reminded me of slightly forbidden chocolate growing up (I was absolutely fascinated by Kinder chocolate when I was a child, I would see it in Italian supermarkets – you couldn’t get it here then – and think it was the height of sophistication), I felt cheered. Lindt Choco Wafers are new and come in three variations: milk hazelnut, milk or plain and cost £1 for two or £5.50 for 135g. I wish I could tell you how many are in the 135g packet, but it was compromised early.
Need I point out, this is not craft chocolate, but for those of you who moan at me every week about how much everything I usually recommend costs, this is for you. I have only tasted the milk hazelnut version. I have little interest in tasting any of the other flavours and think I will be stuck on this for a while, like a teenager playing a song on repeat.
These are small squares of chocolatey, wafery nutty delight. They are sweet, but somehow manage to redeem themselves, and two is the perfect amount to have. My youngest described them as a posh Tunnock’s. I don’t really agree. But I really liked them. So much so that the next day I went on the hunt for more around Oxford Street and got slightly tetchy when I couldn’t find them.
