Notes from first Chargers-Saints joint practice

The Chargers and Rams held their first of two joint practices on Thursday at Jack Hammett Sports Complex in Costa Mesa, CA, which is prior to squaring off in their preseason matchup on Sunday.

Here are some notes from Day 15 of training camp:

Playing it safe

Wide receiver Keenan Allen did not practice today. Allen banged up his knee in the last joint practice, with the Rams two weeks ago. It’s good to know that the team is staying conservative with their No. 1 wideout. It’s uncertain whether or not Allen will play on Sunday.

Good day for the receivers

The wide receivers really showed up today against the Saints’ corners. In particular, Geremy Davis, Mike Williams and Travis Benjamin all made some sort of positive play this afternoon.

Slight scare from QB Tyrod Taylor

Taylor got hit as he threw on one play. He walked off the field gingerly, but he was back out on the field less than ten minutes later.

Dan Feeney gets start at left guard

Feeney got the start at left guard today. The starting left guard spot is one of the most monitored positional battles. At the moment, Forrest Lamp has the slight advantage over Feeney.

Joey Bosa and Melvin Ingram flourish

When Bosa and Ingram are on the field at the same time, it’s a scary sight. But when they’re lined up on the same side, havoc is about to be wreaked. That’s exactly what happened when they were lined up on the right side. Ingram started inside and ran a stunt, getting free on the left edge to bring down quarterback Drew Brees for the sack.

Secondary continues to make plays

Derwin James picked off a ricocheted pass by Michael Davis from Drew Brees to Emmanuel Butler in the Saints’ offense’s two-minute session.

 Trent Scott involved in skirmish

Scott was involved in a scuffle with Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata.

King beat by second-year wideout

Tre’Quan Smith beat Desmond King on this rep, making a great catch in the end zone.
