NotebookLM is going to introduce big upgrades to its platform. In a recent AMA (Ask Me Anything) series on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the company addressed some user questions and confirmed that some of the most requested features, like new source types, voice/dialect support, and API access, are officially in the works.

The NotebookLM team confirmed the new features by saying, “Coming Soon! Some sooner than others” in response to a list of popular feature requests. While the post didn’t specify exact rollout dates, it marks the company’s clearest confirmation yet that much-awaited updates are on the way.
API Access and Other Fan-Favorite Features on the Horizon
One of the most requested features was API support, which will allow developers to potentially plug NotebookLM’s capabilities into their own tools or workflows. The company has finally broke its silence on the feature with a nod to the enthusiasm:

Another question tackled in the AMA clarified the name “NotebookLM” itself. The company originally intended to use only “Notebook,” which was redesigned for the language model era. The team said they had considered dropping the “LM” but chose to keep it due to how well it resonated with users.
Recent Updates: Public Sharing and Mobile Improvements
While these are all the upcoming features, it’s important to keep in mind that NotebookLM has been rolling out a steady stream of updates. For example, recently, the company allowed the public sharing of notebooks, which was again a much-requested feature from educators, researchers, and collaborators. It enables users to generate a public link that allows anyone to view a notebook without requiring login access. While viewers cannot modify source material, they can still interact with AI-generated elements, such as summaries, briefing documents, and FAQs.
Apart from that, the company has rolled out a silent update to its recently launched mobile app. It fixed multiple issues and improved chat responsiveness, source loading, and visual display. Stability improvements were also part of the package; as a result of this update, the NotebookLM app is now much more reliable for day-to-day use.
What’s Next?
Along with all these upcoming improvements, the company is also working on its biggest feature as well called “Video Overviews.” It will be an expansion of the platform’s already popular “Audio Overview” tool, which allows users to convert notes into podcast-style summaries. However, Video Overviews will go a step further by generating short, visually engaging presentations. It will allow users to upload notes, PDFs, or images and have them transformed into video summaries that include key highlights, clear visuals, and narration from an AI voice.
So, with public sharing now live and a growing list of features on the horizon, one thing is clear: NotebookLM is evolving into more than just a note-taking app. It’s becoming a full-fledged AI research assistant.
