'Not welling up, honestly' - Nottingham Forest victory has Brighton fans getting emotional

Nottingham Forest fans were left celebrating a fine 3-0 win over Wycombe Wanderers this afternoon - but the result also reverberated further afield.

Brighton and Hove Albion supporters started to get misty-eyed on social media as some familiar faces did the business for the Reds.

Boss Chris Hughton enjoyed success with the Seagulls during his spell on the south coast.

And since taking charge at the City Ground, he has surrounded himself with players he knows and trusts.

Anthony Knockaert was the only one of Forest’s 14 summer signings to be brought in after Hughton replaced Sabri Lamouchi at the helm - and his loan from Fulham was extended last month, with the winger set to see out the season Trentside.

Meanwhile, Glenn Murray was a deadline day addition for the Reds earlier this week, signing a short-term contract until the end of the campaign.

Both worked with Hughton at Brighton - as did defender Gaetan Bong, who was already at the club.

It was a bit like getting a band back together.

And as the trio played key roles in Forest’s victory at Adams Park to secure a vital three points for Hughton’s side, it did not go unnoticed by fans of their old club.

Murray marked his full debut in the Garibaldi by bagging a brace, while Knockaert rounded off a fine afternoon’s work with a stylish third goal.

Bong helped ensure a clean-sheet, as he kept his place in the back line despite the return of Yuri Ribeiro from suspension.

On the importance of surrounding himself with players he knows what to expect from, Hughton said earlier this week: “It is important, particularly when you come to a club where you know there’s work to be done - particularly on the squad.

“It can take a while to really get to know players and determine what your best combinations are, the best players you see in each position.

“That familiarity is not the be all and end all, but I do think it’s important if you are able to have that.

“The three that I know, I know their abilities and I know what their personalities are like as well.”
