Not the first time?

The Politico's Ben Smith yesterday blogged about remarks Geraldine Ferraro made in 1988 about one of that year's presidential candidates:

"If Jesse Jackson were not black, he wouldn't be in the race," she said. Sound familiar?

Smith has the full context from the Washington Post story in which the quotation appeared - including Jackson's response:

"We campaigned across the South ... without a single catcall or boo. It was not until we got North to New York that we began to hear this from Koch, President Reagan and then Mrs Ferraro ... Some people are making hysteria while I'm making history."

Barack Obama seems to be sidestepping at least some of the hysteria.
